End of Module Self Evaluation

NAME
SOPHIA WATTS

1.  What learning have you inherited through this module and how has it impacted on your own understanding of professional practice? Consider yourself as a student at University as much as an illustrator
·       Being able to categorise and recognise my interests, both within Illustration and outside of it.
·       Knowing the difference between professional impact and personal factors that feed my practice as a whole. I had never really thought about my practice in this way before and I feel like since doing this, my work has become a bit more personal to me on certain issues I came across.
·       Looking at what makes illustration ‘good’. My work has changed a lot since the beginning of the year and mostly because I am trying to think more about the communication of an image rather than just the aesthetic.

2. What approaches/ types of research have you found most valuable over this module?
Why did they have such an impact?
·       Making a Pinterest account solely just for university projects has helped me a lot during this module and has become a part of what I do to look for inspiration and other practitioners work on a daily basis. This also helped me to distinguish what it is I like about different kinds of art in general.
·       Blogging key things from my Pinterest account has helped me to pinpoint the things I like and don’t like and why. I feel like reflecting on why this is has helped me understand how the different elements within my own practice work.

3. In what way has PPP informed the way your work in other modules and your illustration practice as a whole?
·       Looking at myself and thinking about where I want to place myself within the industry has changed the way I think about illustration completely. I have found that due to this I am looking at very different kinds of making imagery and my likes and dislikes have changed, with my own work and others.
·       My methods of research have been more pro-active since using my PPP blog and I found that I want to go and see things for myself more, rather than searching Google for images of a place/person, etc.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your PPP submission and how will you address this in the future?
·       I feel like I was a bit disconnected from this module towards the end of the year. I think this was mostly due to the pressures of other modules and because the module is fairly open and on going, I kept putting it to the back of my mind. Next year I will make sure to set time aside purely to think and blog about PPP.
·       Although I have blogged some of my Pinterest account I think I could have done more, I have a lot of things on my account that have influenced me. Also, films, TV and music have all also impacted my practice which I haven’t really documented much.

5. What communities of practice and professional contexts do you intend to investigate further as you approach level 5? Why do they appeal to you?
·       Recently I have been really interested in paper cut imagery and shape mixed with drawing/painting. This could help me to produce more exciting imagery for editorials or predominantly books (what I want to do). I would like to explore this further in level 5 as I am finding that this approach forces me to be more playful and experimental.
·       I have always loved children’s storybook illustrations and I think I would like to develop this interest more and work on characterisation, step away from just using representational imagery and be more open to trying new ways of describing a scene/mood, etc.

6.How would you grade yourself on the following areas:
(please indicate using an ‘x’)

The evaluation of your work is an important part of the assessment criteria and represents a percentage of the overall grade. It is essential that you give yourself enough time to complete your written evaluation fully and with appropriate depth and level of self-reflection. If you have any questions relating to the self-evaluation process speak to a member of staff as soon as possible.

A copy of your end of module self evaluation should be posted to your studio practice blog. This should be the last post before the submission of work and will provide the starting point for the assessment process. Post a copy of your evaluation to your PPP blog as evidence of your own on going evaluation.
